Pearl's advanced aesthetic sense

Last week we went to the art gallery in town and for the first time Pearl showed interest in a work. She really liked the realistic sculpture of a kookaburra. She kept reaching out to it and would have touched it if I had let her.

On Friday we stopped to examine a sculpture at the community hall. It is a striking work of a man stepping out of the wall, only half way through, and his face is a horrible rictus. (I'm not sure if that is intentional or if it is merely poorly made - the proportions are not quite right either.)

Pearl really really did not like it. She grabbed hold of me and shrank away from it. She stretched out one hand to touch it and then changed her mind and turned her face away. Another child from mother's group came up and banged on it cheerfully. (Insensitive clod.)

She has now shown a preference for some art and a distaste for a scary sort. Clearly she is a sensitive and intelligent child:-)
